Period 53 UNIT 14: WHAT HAPPNED IN THE STORY?
Lesson 1 (1,2,3)
STAGE 1: DESIRED OBJECTIVES/ OUTCOMES
A. Objectives
- By the end of the lesson Ps will be able to:
1. Knowledge:
- Ask and answer questions about what happened in a story.
- Pupils can ask and answer questions about what happened in a story.
- Sentence Patterns: What happened in the story? – First, / Then, / Next, /
In the end, _
- Vocabulary: King Hung ordered Mai An Tiem and his family to live on an
island.
The island was very far away. One day, An Tiem found some black seeds and
he grew them. The seeds gave watermelons. An Tiem’s family exchanged the
watermelons for food and drink. King Hung heard about the story and he let An
Tiem and his family go back home.

- Be confident in communicating with friends/ teachers.

B. Language Focus

- Get pupils to talk about what he/she does in his/her free time.
- Lead into new lesson

Activity 1: Look, Listen and repeat.
- Ask pupils to look at the picture to point at each character and elicit their
answers to the questions:
Who’s this? Where are they? What are they doing?
- Play the recording for pupils to listen to the tape
- Play the recording again and ask them to repeat a few times.
- Explain new word: first, then, next, in the end, order, far,
away,watermelon, seed, exchange.
- Say aloud the words, then ask pupils to repeat the words a few times
- Have pupils write down the new words into their notebook.
- Play the recording again for them to repeat line by line.
- Ask pupils to practice in pairs to act out the dialogue.
- Go round and check pupils can repeat and understand the dialogue.
- Check some pairs. Ask other pupils to give comments.
- Give comments.
Activity 2: Point and say.
- Tell the class that they are going to practice asking and answering
questions about what happened in a story, using:
* Structure:
What happened in the story?
First,/Then/Next,/In the end, ...
- Read aloud the phrases in each picture for pupils to repeat.
- Ask pupils to write down the structure in their notebook.
- Have pupils practice asking and answering in pairs.
- Call some pairs to practice in front of the class
- Give feedback and correct mistakes of pronunciation.
Activity 3: Let’s talk.
- Tell the class that they are going to practice further by asking and
answering questions about The Story of Mai An Tiem.
- Get pupils time to work in pairs to ask and answer, using the structure.
- Invite a few pairs to act out their conversations in front of the class.
- Give feedback

- Tell pupils to read the part 1 again.

character

3. Attitude/ Quality:
- Studious and obedient students and love their hometown, family and
friends.
- Be a good man.
- Love reading books

- Co-operation (ready to help friends in pair work/ groupwork).

- Have them look at the pictures and guess what the story is about.
- Check their comprehension by pointing at each picture and eliciting their
answers to these questions: Who are they? What are they talking about? What are they doing?
- Explain new words: greedy, intelligent, think
- Say aloud the word, then ask pupils to repeat these words a few times.
- Have pupils write down the new words into their notebook
- Play the recording and ask pupils to look at their book and listen to the
tape
- Play it again for them to repeat line by line .
- Ask pupils to work in pairs to practice the dialogue.
- Go around and check pupils can repeat and understand the dialogue.
- Check some pairs.

to repeat them a few times.

- Ask pupils to work in pairs, then point at the pictures to ask and answer
using the structure.
- Call some pairs to practice in front of the class.
- Give feedback and correct mistakes of pronunciation
Activity 3: Let’s talk
- Tell the class that they are going to practice further by asking and
answering questions about a book, a story or a character, using:
+ What kinds of story do you like?

- Set a time limit for the class to practice talking in pairs.
- Go around the class and offer help, if necessary.
- Invite a few pairs to act out their exchanges in front of the class.

Lesson 3 (1,2,3)
A.Objectives:
- By the end of the lesson Ps will be able to:
1. Knowledge:
- Give intonation correctly when tell about the story.
- Listen and circle the letters showing the correct words completing the
sentences.
- Listen to the story The Fox and the Crow.
- Sentence Patterns: Revision
- Vocabulary: Revision
2. Skills.
- Develop listening and reading skill.
3. Attitude/ Quality:
- Studious and obedient students and love their hometown, family and
friends.
- Love reading books and be a good man
4. Forming competence:
- Co-operation (Ready to help friends in pair work/ groupwork).
- Self-study (can perform individual tasks and solve problems by
themselves).
- Use language to talk about the listening task and read the chant.

- Tell the class that they are going to practice asking and answering
questions about what happened in The story of Mai An Tiem
- Lead into new lesson

Activity 1: Listen and repeat.
- Tell the class that they are going to practice saying the question and
answers which have falling intonation. - Play the recording all the way through for pupils to listen first.
- Play the recording again for them to repeat the sentences twice
- Ask pupils to read the sentences until pupils feel confident.
- Get some pupils to say the words and sentences in front of the class.
- Correct mistakes of pronunciation
Activity 2: Listen and circle a or b. Then ask and answer
- Tell pupils that they are going to listen to the recording, circle a or b to
complete the sentences.
- Give them a few seconds to read the sentences in silence and guess the
words to fill the gaps.
- Play the recording twice for pupils to listen, circle a or b.
- Play the recording again for pupils to listen and check. Ask the class to
read the sentences aloud.
- Give the correct answers.

Activity 3: Let’s chant
- Tell the class that they are going to listen to the story The Fox and the
Crow.
- Teach them unfamiliar words.
- Play the recording all the way through for pupils to listen and follow in
their books.
- Play the recording again, pausing after each sentence for pupils to repeat.
- Play the recording once more for pupils to repeat the whole chant, show
pupils how to chant and do the actions
- Divide the class into three groups to read the story.
- Invite some pairs to say read and do actions in front of the class
- Give feedback.

- Summary the lesson
D. Homework
- Tell pupils to read the part 1 again.
- Tell pupils to practice chanting again at home.
