Lesson Plan 1(grade 11 – advanced) Period : 36 Preparation date : 03/11/2007 Unit : 5 Lesson : competitions. (P1+2) Aims : By the end of the lesson, the students are able to scan reading for specific information. By the end of the lesson, the students are able to skim reading for general ideas. Lexical items : - controversial - celibate - degradation - feminist - purity - refrain - disqualify - object to Structures : Breaking any of those rules disqualifies the contestant They have particularly objected to swimsuit rounds in competitions. Teaching aids: - textbook - picture / drawings - chalk - handouts Techniques : - Skill – based ( reading), communication approach. Procedures : State/time Teacher’s and students’ activities Blackboard Materials 1. Warm-up & lead-in (3’) Games: which game? – word search - Divide the class into two groups - T shows Ss pictures of a football game, a game show, an athletics or swimming event (one by one) and ask them to name the activities or programs. - with one correct answer, the group scores one point. - T ask Ss: “ what is the word that can be used to describe the common feature of these activities? - T tells Ss that it is the topic of the next unit - T tells SS to open their books to page 64 and ask them to find words in the word square. They are all related to competition. - one correct word earn the group one point. The group that has more points will win the game. - T has Ss start the game - declare the winner Transition: Today’s reading is about a kind of competition, The Beauty Contest. What is like? What do people think about that it? - T writes down on the bb : Stick pictures on the board Competition :Period 36 : Unit 5 : Competitions - Reading Pictures or drawing Chalk and board. 2. Pre-reading (5’) Teaching Vocabulary - write new words on the bb. - elicit meanings from Sts or give explanations yourself - leave some minutes for Sts to copy. - give some practice on pronunciation ( T reads – Sts repeat in chorally, then asks Sts to read individually.) - Remind Sts of Relative Clause, how to use. - controversial (a): gay tranh cai - purity (n) : su tinh khiet, trong trang. - celibate (a) : unmarried - refrain from st: kem che - degradation (n): su suy doi - disqualify (v) loai, cam Chalk and board 3. while - reading (15’) Activity 1: questions and answers (task a, p65,66) - T ask Ss to read the text and find the answers to the questions. - Tell Ss to work with a partner, asking ans answering the questions. - Call on some pairs to ask and answer ans check with the class. Activity 2: True –False statements ( task b) - Ask Ss to read the text and the statements about beauty contests and say if they are true or false - Ask Ss to work with a partner and compare answers. - Call on Ss to read the statements and say their choice.
