I was in a strange city I didn’t know at all, and what’s more, I couldn’t speak a word of the language. On
my second day I got on the first bus that passed, rode on it for several stops, then got off and walked on.
The first two hours passed pleasantly enough, then I decided I had to turn back to my hotel for lunch.
After walking about for some time, I decided I had better ask the way. The trouble was that the only
word I knew of the language was the name of the street in which I lived, and even that I pronounced
badly. I stopped to ask a newspaper-seller. He handed me a paper. I shook my hands. I had to give him
some money and went on my way. The next person I asked was a policeman. He listened to me carefully,
nodded and gently took me by the arm. There was a strange look in his eyes as he pointed left and right
and left again. I nodded politely and began walking in the direction he pointed.
About an hour passed and I noticed that the houses were getting fewer and fewer and green fields were
appearing on either side of me. I had come all the way into the countryside. The only thing left for me to
do was to find the nearest railway station.

in July, I told you about a new friend of mine, Lisa Moran, who lives near my uncle's farm in Napan Valley,
California. You may be curious to know what she is (2) ______.
Well, Lisa is of our age - 17 - and not very tall or slim. In fact, she has slightly rounded shoulders and a
plump face. The best features on Lisa's face are her green eyes and the two dimples on her checks. She (3)
______ lively with her hair cut short and dressed in (4) ______ clothes - jeans and a T-shirt. When I first
met her at my cousin's birthday party, I was attracted by her easy-going and pleasingly direct manners.
Curiously enough, Lisa has the same (5) ______ in music as you and I.
That's enough about Lisa for the moment. How have you been doing with your school work? Please
write soon.
Best wishes
Ann Maxfield

Read the passage carefully, then choose the correct answers.
Last year I went to Nepal for three months to work in a hospital. I think it's important to see as much of
a country as you can, but it is difficult to travel around Nepal. The hospital let me have a few days’ holiday,
so I decided to go into the jungle and I asked a Nepalese guide, Kamal Rai, to go with me.
We started preparing for the trip at six in the morning, and left camp with two elephants carrying our
equipment. It was hot but Kamal made me wear shoes and trousers to protect me from snakes. In the jungle
there was a lot of wildlife, but we were trying to find big cats, especially tigers. We climbed onto the
elephants' backs to get better view, but it is unusual to find tigers in the afternoon because they sleep in the
heat of the day.
Then, in the distance, we saw a tiger, and Kamal told me to be very quiet. We crept nearer and found a
dead deer, still bleeding. This was the tiger's lunch! Suddenly I started to feel very frightened.
We heard the tiger a second before we saw it. It jumped out like a flash of lightning, five hundred kilos
plus and four meters long. I looked into its eyes and face, and saw right down the animal's throat. It grabbed
Kamal's leg between its teeth, but I managed to pull Kamal away. One of our elephants ran at the tiger and
made it go back into the grass, so we quickly escaped to let the tiger eat its lunch. That night it was
impossible to sleep!
