Unit : 13 Lesson : Entertainment - Reading

I. Aims :

- By the end of the lesson, the students are able to skim for general ideas.

- By the end of the lesson, the students are able to scan for specific details.

II. Lexical items :

- melting pot -world-renown -criticism

- exhibition -mislead

III. Structures :

- It is in its major cities that many concerts and theatrical performances are found.

- Many movies produced in the USA are watched nightly by millions of people both in the US and around the world.

IV. Teaching aids:

- textbook - picture / drawings

- chalk - handouts

V. Techniques :

- Skill – based ( reading, speaking)

Lesson Plan 25(grade 11 – advanced) Period 105 : Preparation date : 16/3/2008 Unit : 13 Lesson : Entertainment - Reading Aims : By the end of the lesson, the students are able to skim for general ideas. By the end of the lesson, the students are able to scan for specific details. Lexical items : - melting pot -world-renown -criticism - exhibition -mislead Structures : It is in its major cities that many concerts and theatrical performances are found. Many movies produced in the USA are watched nightly by millions of people both in the US and around the world. Teaching aids: - textbook - picture / drawings - chalk - handouts Techniques : - Skill – based ( reading, speaking) Procedures : State/time Teacher’s and students’ activities Blackboard Materials 1. Warm-up & lead-in (7’) Game: Pictionary -Divide the class into small groups -Ask tow representatives, one from each group, to the board . -tell SS you are going to show the representatives some words, one by one , they will then draw the thing on the board and the groups will have to say what it is. -The fist group to call out the word or phase score one point. The group with more points wins the game. -Check SS’ understanding of instructions and have them start the game. -Keep a running total of points for each group on the board. -Declare the winner. Transition: -Unit 13 is about entertainment. In the reading today, we ‘ll get to know more about entertainment somewhere. - write down on the board: Period : Unit :13 Entertainment ( Reading) photocopies Chalk and board. 2. Pre-reading (5’) Teaching Vocabulary - write new words on the bb. - elicit meanings from Sts or give explanations yourself - leave some minutes for Sts to copy. - give some practice on pronunciation ( T reads – Sts repeat in chorally, then asks Sts to read individually + a melting pot: noi pha tron nhieu sac toc + exhibition: cuoc trine lam + renown = fame, distinction : tieng tam , danh tieng + mislead :lam cho ai nghi sai lac ve ………. + criticism =: su / loi chi trich phe phan Chalk and board 3. while - reading (15’) Activity 1: Guiding Question - T ask Ss to skim the text quickly to answer the question: (expected: (Different forms of ) entertainment in the USA ) - Tell Ss to work with a partner, asking and answering the question. - Call on a pair to ask and answer and check with the class. Activity 2: Matching subtitles with paragraphs (task a, p. 180 ) - Ask Ss to read the text and match the subtitles with the paragraphs. - when they have finished , tell SS to compare answers in pairs. - Go over the answers with the whole class. Guiding Question: -What is the passage about? Expected Answers: 1. c 2. d 3. a 4. b 5. f 6. e Chalk + book + small board 4. Post-reading (15’) Discussion -Put SS into small groups of 4 or 5. - ask them discuss and share ideas on the following topics: a. Popular forms of entertainment in your hometown b. Your favorite form of entertainment. - go around monitor and give help if necessary. - call on SS to report about their groups’ discussion and share. - give feedback and comments. . textbooks 5. Homework (2’) reviewing vocabulary. - tell SS to learn the new vocabulary and do task b, p.181. Book and notebook
